When you’re dealing with dental injury or trauma, the last thing that you want is to have to wait to get effective treatment. That is why our O’Fallon dentists provide emergency dental care; we’re here to help you get the care you need precisely when you need it.

There are a number of different types of dental emergencies that can pop up. The type of dental problem that you’re experiencing will dictate your next steps.

  • Cracked or Broken Teeth

If possible, save any missing tooth portions, as your dentist can use these as references when completing bonding and dental restorations. Patients with minor enamel damage can wait until normal business hours to seek treatment. Damage that results in exposed nerves or pulp may require immediate care.

  • Tooth Loss

When a tooth has been knocked out in an accident or due to dental trauma, there is a short window of time in which the tooth is still viable and may be able to be reinserted into the patient’s smile. Gently place the dislodged tooth back into the gum tissue until you can get to a dentist’s office. If this hurts, or it is not possible, you can alternatively place your tooth in a glass of milk until your appointment.

If you have related pain, do not apply medications directly to the damaged tissue; doing so can cause inadvertent damage and irritation. Instead, use a cold compress on your cheek or jaw to numb the sensitive area. You can also take over-the-counter pain medications to stay comfortable.

When you’re faced with an unexpected dental problem, our O’Fallon emergency dentists are here to help you. Please give our office a call to learn more about emergency care, and to speak to a member of our team!
