O’Fallon Cosmetic Dentist Helps Patients Minimize Unsightly Discoloration

Dental discoloration and staining, is, unfortunately, something that almost all people have to deal with at some point. The good news is that darkness and discoloration do not have to be permanent. Our O’Fallon cosmetic dentists use all kinds of treatments to lighten patient’s smiles in no time.

The portion of the tooth becomes discolored is called the dental enamel. Dental enamel starts out as a white, bright, and sturdy protective layer of the tooth. Over time, however, dental enamel can weaken, and absorb discoloration.

Commonly, the first way that our dental team works to minimize discoloration is by applying lightening formulas to the patient’s enamel. These formulations are often in gels, and held close to the teeth my mouthpieces.

Whitening treatments minimize existing surface stains, and help to restore the teeth to their previous levels of luminosity and whiteness.

However, these treatments are not effective for every type of discoloration, and they are not appropriate for every patient. That is why our dentists offer alternative treatments to brighten smiles.

Dental bonding: this treatment involves our dentist covering the patient’s natural enamel with dental resin. The resin can be shaded to match the patient’s smile. And once the resin has cured, it stays permanently in place, and looks just like natural dental enamel!

Lumineers: Similarly to dental bonding, Lumineers are used to cover a patient’s existing enamel. Rather than being made of resin, however, Lumineers are individual porcelain cosmetic restorations. Our dentist will attach one Lumineer to each tooth necessary. Lumineers are permanent cosmetic restorations, so they stay in place 24/7, and you’ll care for them just as you care for your natural teeth.

When you come in to speak with our O’Fallon cosmetic dentists, our team will assess your smile, and help you decide what type of cosmetic treatment is ideal for you. Just know that, no matter what the current state of your teeth, our dentist can help you rejuvenate your smile!
