Here Are Some Healthy Back-To-School Dental Habits From Our O’Fallon Dentists

Written by Dr. Brace on Aug 23, 2022

It’s that time of year: many of us are getting used to new schedules and routines, and we’re tweaking our daily habits as a result. With that in mind our O’Fallon dentists have put together this quick overview of simple steps you can take to prioritize your oral health throughout the day. You’ll see that it’s easy to do!

Carry Water

Now is the perfect time to develop a new healthy habit, and start carrying a water bottle with you throughout the day. Water consumption is paramount to staying hydrated and combating dreaded dry mouth. When you keep water with you, you take the guesswork out of staying hydrated—you won’t be dependent on being near accessible water fountains, and you won’t have to settle for sugary or acidic beverages if water isn’t available.

Rinse Habitually

As you acclimate to a new meal and snack schedule this year, we encourage you to take the time to refresh your smile with a quick rinse after eating and drinking anything other than water. When you rinse your smile, you clear away plaque and dental debris, freshen your breath, promote enamel re-mineralization, and clear discoloring foods and drinks from your dental enamel!

Minimize Bad Habits

Our dental team also encourages you to stay alert for reflexive or unconscious habits that may be hurting your smile. If, for example, you find yourself chewing on the tip of your pen or pencil as you work, you may be causing enamel or soft tissue damage without realizing it. Similarly, many people clench or grind their teeth in times of concentration. The problem is that this behavior can lead to enamel thinning and even TMJ dysfunction.

Try incorporating one or two of these suggestions into your schedule and see how your smile looks and feels! Our O’Fallon dentists are always here to answer any questions you may have, and to offer helpful tips. We look forward to speaking with you!
