The best thing that you can do right now, at this moment, is to decide whom you will call in a dental emergency, and how you’ll contact them. Does your dentist have a special phone number that you are meant to use in an emergency? Have you confirmed that your dentist provides emergency treatment? Make sure that the contact information for your emergency dentist is in an easy-to-locate place.
When you’re faced with a dental trauma, you want to make sure that you preserve as much healthy dental structure and tissue as possible. If you have a tooth knocked out, for example, try to preserve the tooth to keep it viable until you get to your dentist’s office. This may mean gently re-inserting the tooth into its socket in your mouth, or, if that is not possible, placing the tooth in a glass of milk until you see your dental team. Take care not to dislodge any dental pulp or roots that may be attached to your tooth.
Dental emergencies are often painful, but it’s very important that you do not put a numbing agent or medication directly on your oral tissues. You can take an over the counter medication to help manage pain, and use icy compresses on the outside of your cheek and jaw to numb the area.
Our O’Fallon dentists are here to give you any additional information and support that you may need in a dental emergency. Give us a call to get started!
